    When Childlike Wonderment Goes Awry

I discussed childlike wonderment in a previous blog post, “The Five C’s of Tantric Principles.” This concept has been part of my life for… well, pretty much my whole life.

    I was a curious child.

I seemed more interested in how something worked than in what it was meant to do. I attribute my ability to work out problems—mechanical, physiological, mental, or spiritual—to the curiosity that has been with me for as long as I can remember.

Well, that plus the amount of Agatha Christie novels I read growing up. “Whodunits?” are another way to sharpen one’s powers of deduction. I adored Miss Marple. I found Hercule Poirot was talented but annoying.

That same attitude continues today in my adult life.

There’s a danger, however, in childlike wonderment. It’s when we take wonder out of the equation and sit about figuring out an answer that may not be any of our concern.

Sometimes I think too hard about an issue in my life.

    Or, for too long.

The universe acts on our desires, but if we state a desire, then decide all the ways it can’t work… well… that’s a problem.

    Here’s how that plays out.

Let’s use a single senior who says he wants a new partner. Then he follows up on all the failures he’s had in the past.

“No one wants to date a man my age.”

“All the guys with profiles online look better than me.”

“I want someone mature, regardless of age, but the young guys just want me for my money.”

I know how old I am, and I also know how I feel. On a good day, I still feel like I’m in my forties. On a bad day… well, you can see how easy it was for me to come up with an excuse, right?

Understand this: The universe acts on our desires immediately. That doesn’t mean our hopes, dreams, and goals magically appear in our edition of space/time. In the world of source, things are immediate; but on the physical plane, it can take a while.

When we change our minds—which is what all the excuses we create accomplish besides making our friends’ eyes roll—the universe gets a new signal. We end up with more of the same, which isn’t what we planned. Why? Because the universe works on what is in our current thinking, not on some fantasy we don’t really believe is possible.

    Three Steps to Change That

There is a simple way to overcome this—not necessarily easy—but it works with any desire.

    1.      State your desires clearly. Just one desire. Your fondest hope. Your dream.

    2.      Let it go. People lift their hands to heaven for a reason. It is a physical way of letting go of a problem so it can be handled on another level.

    3.      Go do something you want to do that has no relation to the desire. This is the easy part, provided we truly let our desires go in step two.

This way of dealing with problems has served millions of people, including me, throughout human history. The difficulty can come from being taught that to accomplish something, we must work hard.

    It’s not necessarily the case.

Yes, work may be involved, but if the work we’re doing is asking for a new partner while berating ourselves in the mirror, it’s counterproductive. In this scenario, while the universe is bringing Mr./Ms. Right into our lives, we could make sure our protein comes from fresh fruits and vegetables, not another tub of ice cream to drown our sorrows that he/she/they didn’t call or show up.

I’ve used a new relationship as an example, but you can substitute anything you desire. Whether it’s a new job, a different place to live, a new hobby, dealing with a physical issue… anything. This works.

By turning our attention to something else besides our desire, we get out of the way of the universe, in essence, and it puts the wheels in motion.

It can, however, require work on our part, but not on solving the request. Here’s the kicker:

Would you rather work to increase the chances of failure, or work toward fulfilling your fondest desire? Because the former is precisely what we may end up doing, and the latter requires a total change in attitude.

    Yes.

I’m asking you to choose and perhaps change your basic way of thinking.

The bottom line is that it’s only my suggestion.

    It’s your choice.

    Choose well.
