    Compersion

It's more than the opposite of jealousy.

I’ve written before that compersion is one of the “5 C’s” of living a tantric lifestyle. Over this past weekend, I found a posting from Pink Tantra, aka Robert Adams, the yoga teacher I’ve recently started studying under.

Pink lives in Scotland, and we met through the Tantra 4 Gay Men (T4GM) group when we were both teaching online classes for T4GM. Since then, we’ve met in person in the Diploma series and during other T4GM events.

But his posting on his teaching website over the weekend wasn’t about compersion.

    It was about love.

The YouTube video he posted was from a live performance from the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris. Les Arts Florissants perform an excerpt from Rameau’s “Tendre Amour” (Tender Lover) by Les Indes Galantes, conducted by William Christie and Paul Agnew.

In my blog, “5 C’s of Tantric Principles,” I describe compersion this way:

This word is most generally defined as the opposite of jealousy. But it’s so much more than that simple explanation. Compersion comes to us from the world of polyamory, intimate relationships with more than one partner. It is the reason those of us in successful poly relationships can cope with our partners having other partners. To have compersion for a lover, a friend, or a family member is to be filled with joy at their joy! It is also the ultimate level of unconditional love. As one woman put it, “Why would I stop someone I love from loving someone else?”

Besides being a beautifully performed piece, the video is also a perfect example of what compersion can look like in the people we surround ourselves with. The love, respect, concern, and joy that the musicians and singers show for one another brought tears to my eyes.

I leave you to watch this gorgeous piece of music. Picture, if you will, what our world would look like if we each gave those around us the love, support, and admiration that the people in the video are expressing. I considered sharing the moments that matter to me by typing the minute and second they occur, but I decided to give you the same joy I felt as I watched the full 5.21 minutes. The love in the eyes of the lady in red as she quietly acknowledges the singer to her right; the expression of the soloist with the long dangly earrings, as her face conveys concern and attention to what’s going on around her; or any one of many faces in the background who are revelling in the performances of the people around them. These are just three examples I hope you’ll enjoy, but I trust you will find many more.

What would your life look like if you did this where you work, where you shop, or in your own family? Or, if you were the recipient of those feelings?

To me, this is a big part of living a tantric lifestyle.
